When the pianos are rented, repair and refinishing is usually a responsibility of the contractor. Often, universities and colleges will own their own pianos rather than rent them from local or national piano company contractors. Performance pianos are especially cared for at the academic level since the school's reputation somewhat depends upon the old tradition of academic exhibition where faculty and students perform for those invested in the cultural caliber and future of the artistic community. As you can imagine, the job not only entails skilled handling of the pianos themselves, but also a constant interchange with faculty and students about pianos, piano music and the relationship between performer and instrument. At schools with large inventories, such as the University of Texas at Austin, piano technicians will be in care of hundreds of pianos - class room and performance pianos - at one time. Often the number of pianos at a single college or university will be large enough that an entire department will be dedicated to piano maintenance, repair, rebuilding, refinishing and restoration. Very often universities and colleges in Texas, both public and private, have what is called a "resident piano technician." A resident piano technician is either contracted or employed by the particular school to repair pianos owned by the school.
